Homemade Bagels

Baking with CarriesCooking

I have wanted to try making homemade bagels for a long time.  I have never tried before today.

Ingredients
2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 package of yeast
3/4 cup water
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar

Directions
  1. Combine 2 cups of flour with yeast, warm water, 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar and salt until well mixed.
  2. Knead in additional 1/2 cup of flour until smooth and elastic (slightly more or less flour might be needed) about 7 minutes.
  3. Let rest, covered, for 10 minutes.
  4. Divided dough into 6 pieces.
  5. Punch hole into each piece of dough about 1 inch wide and place on greased cookie sheet.
  6. Let rest, covered for 20 minutes.
  7. Place in broiler about 5 inches from heat for about 2 minutes each side.  (should not get a chance to brown)
  8. Heat 1 gallon of water to boil and add 1 tablespoon of sugar.
  9. Cook bagels in boiling water for about 7 minutes turning once. (3 or 4 at a time)
  10. Drain and place back on greased cookie sheet.
  11. Bake in oven at 375 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes.
  12. Place on cooking rack to cool.

First time in bagel shape.

Boiling the bagels.

And, they are done.  (Could have divided dough better.)

What can I say other than they taste great.  There is a lot of time involved, but most is waiting so I got other things done.  Not something that I am going to do every day but, I plan on making it a again.
